DAY 01 SHANGHAI/BEIJING

Upon arrival, be met & transfer to hotel. Half day tour of Tian An Men Square which witness some of the most dramatic chapters of China history. From here, we enter the Forbidden City – where the Emperors of China resided for close to 600 years. China’s imperial history unfolds as you explore the huge compound and the various rooms in the palace complex. (Lunch included)

DAY 02 BEIJING

This morning, explore the Hutong (traditional neighborhood) like the way of the locals – biking. We will visit the Siheyuan, Prince Gong Mansion, and the local family. Catch the sight of this fast disappearing Chinese traditional way of life. Try a typical Chinese dumpling (Jiaozi) lunch at local people’s courtyard house. In the afternoon, you have a choice of one of the following 3 experiences.

1. Learning Chinese paper-cut in the Hutong area. Paper-cut is one of the most popular traditional folk arts in China. Only with a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, the professional can create everything in the world magically. This tour will lead you to see how magical handiworks and give you the chance to try it!

2. Kite making class. Tie two sticks at right angles, cover them with paper or cloth, and add a tail! Sound simple? The result could be a beautiful piece of art soaring hundreds of feet into the air. You will see the master at work and try making them yourself. On a suitably windy day, you may try to fly your work! Enjoy!

3. Calligraphy class. Chinese calligraphy is one of the four basic skills and disciplines of the Chinese literati -Shu (calligraphy), Hua (painting), Qin (a string musical instrument), and Qi (a strategic board game). Regarded as the most abstract and sublime form of art in Chinese culture, “Shu Fa” (calligraphy) is often thought to be most revealing of one’s personality. (Evening option: Chinese Kong Fu Show, price from RMB120 to RMB340 per person)

Day 3 Beijing

Of course, no visit to Beijing is complete without the Great Wall! Today, we make a full day to the Great Wall Mutianyu section, a less visited section of the Wall.
Great Wall hike option: For the more adventurous, we offer the option of a full day hike on a less visited section of Wall from Jinshanling to Shimatai. Start the day with a 3 hours drive to Jinshanling. A cable car ride takes you to one of the towers from where your hike starts. The total length of this section from Jinshanling to Simatai is about 11km and takes about 4 to 4.5 hours. You will past 30 towers and some built with different structure and appearances. Hanging precariously onto the Yanshan Mountain, Simatai Great Wall is known for its steepness, ingenuity and uniqueness. Packed lunch en route. At the end of the hike, drive 2 hours to Mutianyu and spend the night in the fresh countryside air at the Countryside Hotels, nestled amongst the villages or experience the nostalgia of a former Maharajah Hunting Lodge. (Breakfast & lunch included)

DAY 04 BEIJING/SHANGHAI

Spend the morning at leisure in Beijing. Or for those on the Great Wall hike option, if you are energetic, rise early for a sunrise on the wall. Return to hotel breakfast and enjoy another morning of Chinese rural life. Transfer to the airport for flight back Shanghai.
